Roblosophy: Can we really be objective about Rob?

Gals- twist your hair up into a sexy bun, fasten it with a pencil, put on your sexy librarian glasses hike up those tweed pants and unbutton the top button on your work shirt, and let’s get serious for today’s Roblosophy, coming to us from toooldforthis:

Dear Rob.

I admit, this isn’t really a letter to you, it’s a letter about you.  So why don’t you take a break – go have a beer, film an orgy scene or do whatever it is you do when you’re not reading LTR.  I have a question for the LTR gals today.

Dear LTR Ladies:

After watching Remember Me last weekend (no, this is not a Remember Me letter), I began to ponder whether or not I can really judge Rob’s acting.  I spent some time surfing some Rob fan sites and not surprisingly, some of the more avid sites were filled with comments about how great Rob was in RM.  But I expected that because there will always be a certain number of fans who love whatever he does no matter what.  And that goes for any popular actor, not just Rob.  That’s why LTR is my favorite Rob site.  We all love Rob and think he’s hot and sexy and want to do him behind a dumpster, yada, yada, yada.  But what makes this site unique is that we can also make fun of him for the ridiculous and awkward things he says and does.  And we’re not afraid to be honest when we see him looking less like a f*#ckable movie star and more like a hobo in desperate need of a shower.

Which made me wonder this weekend, am I being too hard on Rob?  Am I expecting more out of him than I would any other actor, simply because I don’t want to be thought of as one of those rabid fans that thinks he’s always wonderful?  Am I like those parents who say, “Yes, a B is a good grade, but I expect my child to get straight A’s”?  Can I truly be objective when it comes to Rob?  ‘Cause let’s face it, we may not consider ourselves like the “other” fans, but we still read a blog about him every day and post comments on that blog almost every day.  That makes us pretty big fans.

Wow! What a good lover err, I mean, actor you are, Rob!

When I sat down in the theater last Saturday, I had to remind myself to be objective.  But when I first saw Rob sitting outside his bedroom window smoking and drinking, my heart sped up a little and I thought, “Oooh, there he is.  That’s Rob!”  At that point he hadn’t said a word and already I was thinking “Rob” not “Tyler”.  For the rest of the movie I was thinking things like, “I wonder how hard it was for Rob to watch his sex scene knowing his family was watching it too.”  or “I remember Rob talking about this scene.”  If he can’t convince us he’s someone else for 2 hours, is that his fault or ours?  Are we too close to the situation to judge him fairly?

I thought he did a good job in Twilight.  But when I first saw that movie, I had no idea who he was.  I read the book a couple of weeks after seeing the movie and I remember thinking then that he did a good job.  And I was much more objective back then.  (BTW- After reading the book, I thought KStew did not do a good job portraying Bella – but I’m not brave enough to start that sh*tstorm!)

Even today, I still think he did a good job in that movie.  Sure there were moments he looked like he needed an Ex-Lax and I would like to have seen him smile a little more during the middle of the movie when they were falling in love, but overall, I think he portrayed Edward well.  I know some critics felt he was too “angsty”, but Edward is a 108 year-old manic-depressive, virgin vampire who has the misfortune of falling in love with the one person he wants to kill the most.  He’s not exactly a happy-go-lucky character.  (But for some reason I still have it bad for Edward :) !! ).

However, I didn’t think Rob’s portrayal of Edward in NM was all that great.  He seemed very reserved, almost like he was phoning it in.

Bring Back Daniel Gale!!

That brings me to Remember Me.  I thought he did an okay job in it.  There were moments his lines seemed forced, and other times he seemed to be bringing his “A” game.  But after a year’s worth of “Robsession”, I have to wonder about my objectivity.  Maybe I need to see Rob in a completely different role.  Sure Tyler was human and he could have sex, but the character is artistic, brooding and emotionally messed-up (sound like Edward?).  I think Rob really needs to break out of that type of character and show us what he’s got (twss).

So I’m interested in what everyone else thinks.  Do you think you can truly be objective?  Or do you think you’re too “close” to the situation?

When I read this letter last week I was like “HMMM- I think she’s right.” And “HMMM- we must discuss this” and “HMMM- this made me remember how hot Tyler-sex was.” Andddddd Discuss!!!

Thanks to my husband (who will never see this thank you) for telling me to change “I’ll sing for Hot Pockets” to “I’ll mumble for Hot Pockets” on the hobo picture. I know you secretly love that I love Rob.

  1. So girls: The post is up. For anyone who wants to read go here:

I put a lot of efford into it so I would appreciate some feedback!
And tried to keep it as spoiler free as possible…

    • Liked your review! Glad you finally got to see it! but yea, the movie isn’t for everyone….I died watching robler throughout the entire movie as well as being really touched by the meaning behind the film.

  2. I have to agree. We are blinded by the fact that he’s the man of our dreams — so automatically he’s brilliant in all movies. We don’t’ even see the character. We see Rob.

I laughed at how you felt when he first came on screen sitting on the fire escape. Becuase THAT WAS ME TOO! I almost wanted to turn to my sister and be like “Can you watch reaaallly closely so you can tell me later if his acting was good or not?” I was instantly gaga and it’s not the mindset you need to judge or critize or comment on how you REALLY feel if you were any other person.

First time I watch TW I thought the movie was horrendous. I didn’t know anyone of the characters so I was like ok they suck. ESPECIALLY Bella. I cringed at the ridiculous awkward teen drama. I did think he looked gorgeous though. He wasn’t so bad. I liked him more than Bella. Definitely. She was horrible. I wished he hadn’t taken acting pointers from her because I knew he was new at acting and she had experience. Sorry. Kill me if you’d like.

but really, if you want a movie where you can forget who Rob is and just look at the character… WATCH LITTLE ASHES!

THAT movie will tell you. you’ll be knocked on your ass. He really is a natural. Needs time to mature but hes got it.

Remember me was good at times. Some moments were tooo Rob and some were toooo cringe worthy cuz you just wanted him do pull it off. And he did.

but I get it. We’re not seeing his character, we’re seeing Rob. And then we sigh and forget.

Rob, if you need REAL criticism on acting, don’t ask us. We’re too busy looking at your hair or neck or jaw or hands or junk or… (the list goes on) to notice. Get another fandom where they don’t care for your looks, but your acting. They’re your best bet. :-)

    insightful, UC. Good point.

ps. that first caption looks like a book I’d LOVE to read. Makes a great book jacket LOL

    • wow, I talk a lot. Good thing I’m sick today and not on my best mindset. Ya’ll would have comments going off 3 pages down cuz of me. :-)

    • Rob, if you need REAL criticism on acting, don’t ask us. We’re too busy looking at your hair or neck or jaw or hands or junk or… (the list goes on) to notice

      yes yes and yes :D

      • ohh… I forget what I was saying cuz of your icon. *transfixed*

  3. I’m not objective, I don’t want to BE objective and nobody can MAKE me be objective…so there!

  4. I have to say that I really loved how he portrayed Tyler.

I adore him it’s true, but I would not see a movie I did not like more then once.. I just won’t… I’d go to see him once… but if I don’t like the movie I won’t go back.

That said.. I’ve seen it 6 times. Go ahead, call me crazy. I’m a nut I’m aware.

But I didn’t go back all those times for him,.. it’s the story.. I just love it.. I thought the entire cast was great. Pierce Brosnan play a great prick… who knew!?

The other thing was.. I never once thought.. Oh there’s Rob, and that’s the truth. I always saw Tyler.. because I don’t think Rob is anything even like Tyler. His portrayal of Tyler made me love the character for sure. And Tyler and Caroline together… melted my heart to see him interact with her. And Tyler and Ally, she was just enough, strong yet.. needing to let go.. wanting to even… I adored Emilie in this movie.

Now, maybe I’m easy to please… maybe I’m a very simple person… or maybe, just maybe, I adore him and find him insanely attractive AND I think he can act, and it’s ok.

We do a lot of joking around about Rob, he’s young… and adorkable for sure.. but the man has talent. I’ve been sparring on the net for the past month with anyone who gave the movie a bad review.. my comments are ALL OVER THE INTERNET… but I know myself, and if I truly agreed with the critics.. I’d be the first to say so. Because that’s what I would want.. honesty.

I’d rather have someone be honest with me then blow sunshine up my skirt…. well unless Rob is doing the sunshine blowing and then……
    ……..
    ………
    ………
    *THUD*

    • Not to mention the Angel hickey on his lower left shoulder blade owns my a$$.. but that’s besides the point!

    • Great post, Kelly! 6 times?? I’m in awe! I’ve only been twice (did the Remember Me Saturday thing) and I bought Saturday’s ticket before I’d even seen it on Friday (so I was assured a seat) and was worried for about .0004 of a second that I wouldn’t want to see it again on Saturday.

  5. I love LA, HTB, thats why I have high hopes for Rob as an actor. I like him in Twilight, but hate his acting in NM (its like he is holding back), thats why I openly wrote in another site that Rob shd stay away from blockbuster movies, it will kill him……Pre Twilght he was loose with his acting. After twiligt, he become more reserved because people were watching. So I say Rob stick to indie, its all about acting there….. She pluck his eyebrows (he has to look 17 for god sakes) which Rob didn;t like at all……

Only Catherine was a hardcore director, he made the actors rehearse their scene even kissing scene. Rob need someone like Cathy who knows how to bring out the best of him. While Chris wasa lame director, who charms everyone and let the actor do their own thing to make them comfortable

  6. Okay…today was my twelfth (that would be 12th) date with Rob in Remember Me. I do think he does a great job as Tyler and I love the story and the relationship of Tyler to Ally and to his little sister. But…if I’m being honest, and I guess I can be, the #1 reason I’ve seen it this many times is that I LOVE looking at Rob and listening to Rob and thinking about Rob.
